Top Benefits of Green Tea

When I tell people I don't drink anything except water and green tea, they usually look at me like I'm crazy, as you're probably doing right now, reading this. Aside from the occasional glass of wine, almond milk in my cereal, and my green smoothies, I only drink water and green tea! I know, it sounds crazy, but I can promise you I feel incredible not drinking anything else. I mean who needs soda or juice that's only made from loads of sugar and 5% real juice/fruit? I most certainly do not! Christopher Ochner, PhD, a research scientist in nutrition at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, says that "if you sub 1-2 cups of green tea for one soda, [in a] year you'd save over 50,000 calories (WebMD)." That's more than 15 lbs! Drinking my green tea in the morning on my commute to work, and chugging water throughout the day keeps me feeling light, and energized. 

Drinking one cup of green tea has a ton of health benefits, but of course, you can't just drink green tea and think that you are healthy, you still need to be active, eat healthy, and not smoke. The number one benefit of green tea is that it's filled with catechins, or antioxidants, that fight and may prevent cell damage

There has been an extensive amount of research done on all of the benefits of green tea on our human body, one of which is that it has been shown to improve blood flow and lower cholesterol, AND lowers risk for hypertension. It blocks bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases good cholesterol (HDL). It has also been found to help arteries function better, which therefore, helps the heart! Preventing heart-related issues and diseases is a huge benefit; our hearts keep us alive! Your brain also needs healthy blood vessels, as well! 

While the research goes back and forth on whether or not green tea is an effective weight loss supplement. While it has the active ingredient EGCG in it, which has been found to speed up metabolism and reduce abdominal fat in some studies, in others, it shows no effect. I'd like to think it helps, even only a little. EGCG has also been found to aid in preventing wrinkles.

Just when you thought there weren't any other benefits, green tea has also been found to detoxify the body from imbalances, which is why green tea is in a lot of slim downs and detox cleanses, and aid in digestion

So why aren't you drinking green tea regularly? If you're not a huge fan of the taste, you can add vanilla almond milk, honey, or lemon. You can also use green tea as the basis for a green smoothie!
