Simple Green Smoothie Recap: Week 1

On my long commute to work, I've fallen in love with listening to podcasts. I love listening to my country music, but there's only so many times I can listen to the same song, so I've found podcasts as my saving grace. My absolute favorite podcast to listen to is The Lively Show. I've been listening to Jess @ The Lively Show for quite a few months now. Jess talks to different people in each episode about different aspects of that individuals life, including personal habits, relationships, and careers. Each episode is designed to "uplift, inform, and inspire." On one particular episode, she speaks with Jadah Sellner, co-founder of Simple Green Smoothies, and discuss the positive effects of green smoothies. Being the health fanatic and personal trainer that I am, I quickly researched the website as soon as I got home from work that day. They were starting a 30 day green smoothie on October 1st, and I quickly found myself signing up.

I eat healthy for the most part - lean, clean, and green, they say right? I also eat plenty of not so healthy meals and snacks too. For awhile now though, I've wanted to get into the habit of making green smoothies each morning, and this was the perfect way to start. Each week I get an email filled with recipes and a shopping list that I can take with me to the store. There's a few ingredients in each smoothie, so it's simple to make each morning. There's absolutely no hassle. What's even better is that the recipes make enough for two! So you can share with your parent, significant other, kids, best friend, dog... or you can save the other one for the next day! I usually share my smoothie with my mom who is doing the challenge with me! It's given us something to talk about, whether it's what our favorite smoothie is that week, or how we feel at the end of the day.

So far I've been doing the green smoothie challenge for a week, and I've noticed that I'm more energized throughout the day. I usually have my shake for my mid morning snack, and it gets me right through to lunch. I haven't noticed a huge difference in my skin or hair yet, but I feel as if I'm feeding my body and taking care of it from the inside out. The foods and drinks we put into our bodies can show on the outside, whether it affects our weight, skin, hair, teeth, etc. I'm not doing this to lose weight, so I'm glad I haven't seen a difference on the scale... and I only know that because I was at the doctor just yesterday. I don't weigh myself. I base my fitness progress on how I look and feel!

I've tried 7 different smoothies, one for each day. My favorite is the Hawaiian Breeze Green Smoothie. This smoothie serves two and includes:

  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • 1 cup coconut water, unsweetened
  • 1 orange, peeled
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 1 cup mango
  • 1 banana

When I started making the smoothies, I tried to get all fresh fruit, but I've realized that frozen fruit works just as good, if not better, making the smoothie extra cold, and smoother! I use my nutribullet, and even though it's a little smaller than it needs to be to hold all the ingredients, it gets the job done, and really blends everything well. No need to spend the money on a fancy blender. You can use what you have!

I would definitely recommend the green smoothie challenge to anyone looking to add more greens and fruit into their lives. It's quick, making it perfect for anyone who's too busy to make  breakfast, and it's perfect for on the go! Dump into a shaker bottle, add some ice and you're good to go! I will be updating my progress and results weekly, so be sure to check back next week!
