Happy Hump Day!
Whenever Wednesday hits, I find myself either in a really good place, where my workouts are on point, and my eating has been great, or I find myself feeling stuck and bored with the same workouts and food. When I feel like that, I always try to change up my routine, either by trying out new workouts in new places, or testing out new recipes or foods.
Yesterday, for my half marathon training, I had to run five miles. I could have ran them around my block, where I usually run, but it would have taken longer because I would have been bored and unmotivated. So I decided to head to the lake, where I was able to run all the way around it and have spectacular views, and breathe easy. I didn't need a running partner, just a good playlist, and my running watch. There were hills behind the lake, a beach, and a grassy area, so it made the run exciting and difficult as I made my way through the different elevations and grounds. On my last time around the lake, I passed by a group of boys, who had seen me run around about 5 times already. This time, the one boy held up a sign that said 'RUN' and cheered me on as I ran past. I can't even begin to describe how motivating that sign was! It pushed me on my last mile, and I was able to finish faster than I thought possible! I had never run 5 miles before, and it felt incredible. If I had stayed at my house and ran around my block, it wouldn't have been the same, and I probably would've struggled to get through my run.
Afterwards, I drank a ton of water, because it was extremely hot out and I would have been extremely dehydrated had I not. Then I refueled with a quick protein shake. I was starving though, so my boyfriend, Sal, and I, headed to a local eatery, where I was able to grab a delicious quinoa salad with chicken and avocado. It was light, refreshing, and yet filling. Had I not went to the lake, I would've found some leftovers in my fridge, and they would have been mediocre at best.
My point? You need to change things up when you find yourself slacking or getting bored. If you're miserable during your workout or eating the same plain tasting food, you need to find new ways to sweat, new recipes to try, and new places to go to. This healthy lifestyle, this journey we're all on, is supposed to be fun and exciting. It's never supposed to get easier. As we continue to challenge ourselves, we get stronger, and we find new ways to workout that we enjoy. If you find yourself getting bored of the same old routine, change it up by trying a new workout, even a fitness class with a friend, switch up your locations for runs, check Pinterest for new recipes to try (eating healthy doesn't mean you need to eat salads for each meal; you're not a rabbit!), and don't be afraid to listen to your body and take a rest day.
